MOHAMED’S TAX EVASION CASE TRANSFERRED TO SENIOR MAGISTRATE FABAYO AZORE

Mohamed’s Tax Evasion Case Transferred to Senior Magistrate

The high-profile tax evasion case against businessman Mohamed was transferred to Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

The matter was first called before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty, where Mohamed’s attorney, Sayeed Jhon, requested more time to prepare for case management. However, Attorney Sanchia Thoday, appearing on behalf of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), informed the court that the prosecution had already completed disclosures and was ready to proceed with the trial.

After considering both submissions, Magistrate McGusty adjourned the case to October 3 for report and ordered that it be transferred to Court Three, where a trial date is expected to be fixed.

The Charges

Mohamed, who was charged in May 2025, faces two counts of tax evasion filed by the GRA:

First charge: On December 7, 2020, he allegedly submitted a false declaration to the GRA regarding a 2020 Lamborghini Aventador, valuing it at US$75,300 instead of its actual worth of US$695,000.

Second charge: The alleged false declaration deprived the state of more than $383 million in customs duties.

Mohamed has pleaded not guilty to both charges and remains on $500,000 bail.

Earlier this year, GRA officials, supported by police ranks, attempted to seize several luxury vehicles from Mohamed’s residence in Houston, Greater Georgetown. Authorities have argued that the vehicles were imported under the remigrant scheme but did not meet the required residency qualifications or proper declaration standards.

The case has since drawn significant public attention, given its implications for customs compliance and tax enforcement in Guyana.
