MELANIE, EAST COAST DEMERARA — Political tensions flared along the East Coast of Demerara on Thursday, August 6, as opposition supporters staged a heated demonstration during President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s community outreach to Melanie Damishana.
The protest coincided directly with the President’s arrival for consultations under the administration’s newly launched Model Village Initiative.
Demonstrators gathered along the public road and community center grounds, renewing calls for executive liability over the July 18 M.V. Barima ferry disaster, which claimed over 70 lives. Protesters reiterated demands for the immediate resignations of Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill and Minister within the Ministry of Public Works Deodat Indar.
Heated Verbal Exchange Between MPs Terrence Campbell and James Bond
The atmosphere grew charged when A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Member of Parliament Dr. Terrence Campbell encountered People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Member of Parliament James Bond—a former APNU parliamentarian who previously crossed the floor.
The encounter quickly deteriorated into an intense shouting match in full view of gathering crowds:
- Escalating Verbal Altercation: Both parliamentarians traded sharp accusations over political loyalty, community representation, and state accountability regarding the M.V. Barima disaster.
- Bystander Intervention: As the exchange drew an agitated crowd of protesters and onlookers, party supporters and police ranks intervened to separate Campbell and Bond, preventing physical escalation.

Thursday’s confrontation in Melanie marks the latest in a series of direct public encounters facing Cabinet delegations across Regions Ten, Four, and Three, as opposition parties and civil society groups maintain pressure ahead of the upcoming international Commission of Inquiry (COI) hearings into the M.V. Barima disaster.
