KISKADEE WATCH SAYS IT WILL DEFEND PRESS FREEDOM AND FACT-BASED JOURNALISM

HGP Nightly News – A new online daily newspaper, Kiskadee Watch, is set to be launched on Sunday, June 14, 2026, with its content expected to be freely available to readers in Guyana and abroad.

According to a press release from the organisation, the digital news entity will be led by Anand Persaud, former Editor-in-Chief of Stabroek News. Persaud will be supported by a team drawn from the former Stabroek News, which the release said helped build a legacy of professional excellence and integrity over 35 years.

The launch comes following the closure of Stabroek News and concerns about the gap left in credible reporting in Guyana. According to the release, a group of Guyanese at home and in the diaspora, along with others concerned about Guyana’s future, worked together to establish Kiskadee Watch.

The organisation said its vision is to re-establish in Guyana a trusted, independent and fact-based news institution that safeguards editorial freedom and strengthens democratic discourse. The name Kiskadee Watch was chosen because of the familiar kiskadee bird, which is common across Guyana.

The release described the bird as hardy and adaptable, noting that it continues to survive despite environmental and social pressures. The newspaper said it hopes to reflect that same resilience.

Kiskadee Watch will initially operate as a free online newspaper through its website, while plans are also being made for a high-quality weekly printed newspaper before the end of the year. The organisation said its financing model will draw from the approach used by the UK Guardian and National Public Radio in the United States.

It described the model as a hybrid structure based on shared ownership and contributions from individuals, organisations, foundations, civil society and the business sector. The release said defending press freedom and free expression comes at a significant cost, and invited Guyanese at home and abroad to contribute to keeping the platform free for readers.

Members of the public will be able to contribute or subscribe through the newspaper’s website or through a bank account that will be publicised later. The release also invited persons interested in subscribing, advertising or donating to contact the newspaper by email.

The statement was issued on behalf of the steering committee for Kiskadee Watch, which includes Janette Bulkan, Rhett Gordon, Jocelyne Josiah, GHK Lall, Cheryl Springer and Alissa Trotz.

The launch of Kiskadee Watch is expected to add a new voice to Guyana’s media landscape at a time when questions about press freedom, accountability and access to credible information remain central to public debate.
