As Guyana marks Indigenous Heritage Month, a young Indigenous advocate is warning that deep-rooted stigmatization against Indigenous peoples continues to persist — primarily fueled by a lack of cultural education and awareness.

Speaking at the launch of this year’s observances, the youth activist stressed that despite centuries of invaluable contributions to Guyana’s development, Indigenous communities remain subject to inequalities and prejudice.
“The stigma exists because many simply don’t understand our history, our culture, or the challenges we still face. More must be done in schools, workplaces, and communities to celebrate our heritage and dismantle stereotypes,” the advocate emphasized.
The remarks come as this year’s Heritage Month is celebrated under the theme: “Igniting Unity, Celebrating Progress, Advancing Our Culture.” Officials say activities throughout September aim to not only highlight Indigenous traditions and creativity but also foster national unity and respect.
