HGP NIGHTLY NEWS – Head of the Guyana Police Force’s Special Branch Unit, Senior Superintendent Prem Narine, says he is deeply hurt by accusations branding him a “murderer” and an “assassin,” insisting that he is simply doing his job as a police officer.
But Narine says the attacks have now gone beyond him, with members of his family, including his brother and his brother’s business, being dragged into the controversy.
Speaking to reporters outside the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Monday, Narine described the situation as disheartening.
“My family is being dragged into this. They have been attacking my brother, his business. They attack me personally, as you are all aware,” he told reporters.
Asked how he felt about being labelled a murderer and an assassin, Narine said the accusations were particularly troubling given that he was carrying out his duties as a law enforcement officer.
“It’s very disheartening because all I am doing is executing my duty as a policeman. I have effected an arrest and that’s all I am doing, giving the evidence as to what I did,” he said.
Narine is a witness in the ongoing extradition proceedings involving Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed, who are facing indictments in the United States.
His remarks come amid continuing controversy surrounding the October 12 shooting incident outside his Kitty, Georgetown residence involving the Opposition Leader.
That incident has since become the subject of competing accounts and an investigation into the alleged unauthorised extraction and disclosure of surveillance footage from the Guyana Police Force Command Centre.
Narine, however, declined to comment further on the allegations and investigations, citing the ongoing nature of the matters.
