The Hydrometeorological Service (Hydromet) is celebrating 60 years of dedicated service to the people of Guyana, marking six decades of contributions toward national development, safety, and sustainability.
Public Relations Officer Kezra Boile highlighted that since its establishment, Hydromet has played a vital role in safeguarding lives, strengthening agriculture, supporting aviation, and guiding disaster management, among other critical national functions.
“For six decades, the Hydromet Service has stood as a pillar of national service. We have been providing weather, water, and climate information to safeguard lives, strengthen agriculture, support aviation services, and guide disaster management,” BoIle said.
Reflecting on the agency’s rich history, Mr. Rahaman shared insights into its early years, noting that Hydromet placed strong emphasis on training, data collection, and knowledge transfer.
“We sent experts to train officers in each section, focusing on data collection procedures—what we call metadata—and the proper recording of these processes. Those were our manuals,” he explained.
As Hydromet marks its 60th anniversary, the agency not only reflects on its achievements but also looks ahead to continuing its mission of building resilience, improving forecasting, and strengthening communities across Guyana in the face of changing climate conditions.
