HGP Nightly News – Former People’s National Congress Reform member Shurwayne Holder is warning that the opposition’s next move on leadership could become a defining credibility test, as the long-delayed process to elect a Leader of the Opposition finally moves toward a date.
In a comment shared alongside a clip of Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir, Holder pointed to Nadir’s remarks made before the Speaker announced when the opposition is expected to meet and elect its leader.
Holder argued that the issues raised by the Speaker are not speculative, claiming the matter was “officially established” through documents presented to Guyana by the United States Government and originating from what he described as a competent U.S. court.
Holder said that while some may be uncomfortable with the Speaker’s framing, opposition MPs should consider the implications of their choice. In his view, it would be hypocritical for opposition lawmakers to criticise corruption, drugs or money laundering if they elect a leader who has not, as he put it, “successfully cleared their name” of those same allegations.
He urged members on the opposition benches to weigh the reputational cost of their decision, cautioning that the public will judge whether the opposition’s anti-corruption posture matches the standard it sets for its own leadership. “Your credibility is now on the line,” Holder said.
