Football: GFF Women’s League and Lady Jags Prep

Conquerors Triumph in Women’s League

The Fruta Conquerors FC secured a solid 2-0 victory over Ann’s Grove United on Tuesday as action continued in the 2025 Guyana Football Federation Division 1 Women’s League at the National Training Centre in Providence.

The first half remained scoreless after a keenly contested battle. Fruta Conquerors broke the deadlock when Shemia Hing capitalized on an accurate cross from the right wing. Karen Jupiter scored the second goal, sealing the win for the Conquerors.

Lady Jags Ready for Concacaf Qualifiers

On Wednesday, anticipation grew at the GFF Headquarters as the Lady Jags Head Coach, Technical Director, and players met with the media. They shared final updates ahead of Guyana’s crucial Concacaf Womenโ€™s Qualifiers clash against Nicaragua set for December 1st at the National Track and Field Centre in Leonora. The team expressed confidence in their preparations, home support, and their determination to represent Guyana with pride.


Squash: Presidential Pledge and Team Title Hunt

President Ali Pledges US$25K to Hurricane Relief

During the official opening of the 2025 Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Senior Championships (Team) at the Royal International Hotel in Georgetown on Wednesday, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali announced a generous pledge of US$25,000 to help Jamaica recover from the effects of Hurricane Melissa. The President reinforced Guyana’s solidarity with the island as it works to rebuild.

Team competition is expected to intensify at the National Racquet Centre on Thomaslands as Team Guyana seeks an ambitious 5th consecutive CASA Team title on home soil. Guyana’s only medal in the Individual Championships came via former Women’s Champion Ashley Khalil, who secured a 3rd place finish.


Cricket: Historic Women’s Inter-County Tournament

Inclusion of Hinterland All-Stars Marks New Era

The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) announced the confirmation of squads and fixtures for the 2025 Senior Womenโ€™s Inter-County Tournament, which will feature both 50-Overs and T20 formats. Administered by the GCB Women Cricket Committee, the tournament highlights the boardโ€™s strengthened commitment to developing women’s cricket nationwide.

This year marks a historic moment with the inclusion of a Hinterland All-Stars Womenโ€™s Team for the first time. This move aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Aliโ€™s national vision of expanding access to sports and opportunities for athletes across all regions.

Captains and Fixtures (50-Overs):

  • Demerara: Led by West Indies player Kaysia Schultz.
  • Berbice: Led by the experienced Shaneta Grimmond.
  • Essequibo: Led by Laurene Williams.
  • Hinterland All-Stars: Led by Radeeka Wilson.

The 50-Overs tournament is scheduled to commence on Friday with two matches: Demerara vs. Essequibo at the LBI Ground, and Hinterland All-Stars vs. Berbice at Lusignan Ground.

West Indies Warm-Up Ends in Draw

In New Zealand, the West Indies officially declared on 346-5 when action resumed in their two-day warm-up match against the New Zealand Select XI at the Burt Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln on Wednesday.

In response, the New Zealand Select XI was bowled out for 264 in 73.4 overs. Cameron Paul (91) and Muhammad Abbass (61) top-scored. The West Indies bowling effort was led by Johann Layne (3-33), with support from Jomel Warrican and Kevem Hodge, who each picked up two wickets.

The West Indies are scheduled to face New Zealand in the first of three Test matches starting on December 1st at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
