National Sports Awards 2025: Omari Glasgow, Nicolette Fernandes, and Malachi Austin Among Top Honourees

The National Sports Commission (NSC) hosted its Annual Sports Awards Ceremony on Saturday at the Pegasus Suites & Corporate Centre in Georgetown, recognising Guyana’s top sporting achievers for 2024.

Footballer Omari Glasgow was named Sportsman of the Year, while bodybuilder Nicholas Albert took the runner-up spot. Squash queen Nicolette Fernandes copped Sportswoman of the Year, with Ashley Khalil as runner-up.

In the junior category, Malachi Austin and Athalyea Hinkson were named Junior Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, while Kaidon Person and Tianna Springer were runners-up.

Awards for Persons with Disabilities went to table tennis player Gibran Safaraz and chess player Abigail Jairam, while cricket coaches Ryan Hercules and Tremayne Smart won Coach of the Year (male and female).

Guyana’s national squash team earned Team of the Year, and the Guyana Basketball Federation captured Association of the Year.

In journalism, Jemima Holmes (Guyana Times) won Print Journalist of the Year, Eric Collymore took Non-Print, and Avenash Ramzan (News Room) was awarded Broadcast Journalist of the Year.


GFF Elite League Season VII Prize Ceremony: Slingerz FC Takes Top Honours

The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) celebrated the success of Elite League Season VII at the National Training Centre, Providence, on Friday, rewarding the top four clubs and standout performers.

  • Slingerz FC – $2,000,000 (Champions)
  • Guyana Police Force FC – $1,200,000
  • Guyana Defence Force FC – $800,000
  • Western Tigers FC – $400,000

Individual awards included:

  • Most Valuable Player: Darron Niles (Slingerz FC) – $150,000
  • Top Scorer: Neron Barrow (GPF FC) – $100,000
  • Best Goalkeeper: Akel Clarke (Slingerz FC) – $100,000
  • Best Young Player: Malcom Hendricks (Santos FC) – $75,000

Mainstay Goldstars and Santos Dominate in GFF Women’s Division 1 League

Women’s football action continued on Friday at the NTC, Providence, where Mainstay Goldstars demolished Den Amstel 9–0, with Ashley Cozier and Analisa Robinson each scoring hat-tricks.

In the second fixture, Santos FC defeated Rivers’ View United FC 3–0, with Afeena Baptiste netting a brilliant double after an early own goal.


Deo, Lashley, and Mangal Triumph at Banks Beer Cup Golf Tournament

The 2025 Banks Beer Cup Golf Tournament at the Lusignan Golf Club produced thrilling results on Sunday.

  • Ladies Champion: Dr. Joaan Deo (Gross 48, Net 41, Handicap 7)
  • Seniors Champion: Mark Lashley (Gross 47, Net 34, Handicap 13)
  • Men’s Category:
    • Mike Mangal (Handicap 4) – Net 31
    • Feroze Barakat (Handicap 4) – Net 32
    • Raj Misir (Handicap 11) – Net 34

Richard Haniff won Longest Drive, and Jaipaul Suknanan took Nearest to Pin.


NZ Lead WI 2–1 as Rain Forces No Result in Fourth T20I

New Zealand now lead the West Indies 2–1 in their five-match T20I series, after Friday’s nine-run victory and Sunday’s rain-affected no-result.

In the third T20I, NZ posted 177–9 (20 overs), led by Devon Conway’s half-century and Daryl Mitchell’s 41.
The Windies were bowled out for 168, with Romario Shepherd (49 off 34) and Shamar Springer (39 off 20) showing resistance.
Ish Sodhi (3–34) earned Player of the Match honours, while Jacob Duffy took 3–36.

Sunday’s fourth match was abandoned after just 6.3 overs with the Windies on 38–1. The series concludes Wednesday with the decisive fifth T20I.
