School Football, Bodybuilding and Cricket Highlight Packed Day of Sports Action

Action continued across multiple sporting disciplines on Wednesday, delivering excitement on the football field, anticipation in bodybuilding, and high drama in youth and international cricket.

KFC Goodwill Schools Football Tournament Continues

Football fans were treated to four high-scoring fixtures as the 2025 KFC Goodwill Schools Football Tournament rolled on at the Ministry of Education Ground in Georgetown.

In the opening match, Suriname Technical School outclassed Annai Secondary in a thrilling 9–3 contest. The second encounter saw West Ruimveldt Secondary produce a dominant performance, crushing ACEA Bahamas 15–2. Player of the Match Jeremiah Griffith led the onslaught with a dazzling five-goal haul, while Donovan Welcome added four. Marvin Sealy and Dominic Lesprance both scored braces, with Joel Griffith also finding the back of the net.

Match three was a tightly contested affair, with St. Benedict College of Trinidad edging Jose Viera of Brazil 1–0. Defending champions Chase Academic Foundation then sealed a narrow but hard-fought 3–2 victory over Kingston College of Jamaica, courtesy of goals from Shaquan David, Nyron Barrow, and Mark Glasgow.

Mr. Guyana Bodybuilding Championship Launched

In bodybuilding, the Guyana Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (GBBFF) officially launched its Senior National Bodybuilding Championship on Sunday at Olympic House in Liliendaal.

The prestigious Mr. Guyana event is set for Sunday, December 21, at the National Cultural Centre. GBBFF President Roger Callender confirmed that more than 30 athletes have already registered, with expectations of 35 to 40 competitors by the official weigh-in on December 20.

Cash prizes have been confirmed, with the Mr. Guyana champion set to receive $300,000, while the Bikini Overall and Men’s Physique Overall winners will each take home $200,000. New categories this year include Fit Model divisions for both males and females, as well as Kids Fitness, alongside traditional bodybuilding and fitness classes.

Barbados Level U-13 Cricket Series

In youth cricket, the Barbados Under-13 team produced back-to-back victories to level their five-match 40-over bilateral series against Guyana at two games apiece.

In match three at Lusignan, Guyana posted 111-8 from 40 overs, with Afraz Khan top-scoring with 39. Barbados successfully chased the target, reaching 112-7 to win by three wickets.

Momentum swung further in Barbados’ favour in the rain-affected fourth match at the Everest Cricket Club. Guyana managed 119-8 from 35 overs, but Barbados chased a revised target of 106 with ease, winning by seven wickets. The series now heads into a decisive fifth and final match on Friday at Everest.

West Indies Name Squad for ICC U-19 World Cup

Cricket West Indies has officially announced its 15-member squad for the ICC Under-19 Men’s World Cup, scheduled for January 15 to February 6, 2026, in Zimbabwe and Namibia.

The squad will be led by Barbadian top-order batter Joshua Dourne, with Guyana’s Jonathan Vanlage named vice-captain. Fellow Guyanese Shamar Apple, a wicketkeeper-batter, also earned selection as the West Indies prepare for the global tournament.

New Zealand Dominate Day One of Final Test

At the international level, New Zealand dominated day one of the third and final Test against the West Indies at the Bay Oval. After winning the toss and batting first, the hosts closed on an imposing 334-1 from 90 overs.

Devon Conway remained unbeaten on a superb 178, while captain Tom Latham struck a classy 137 before being dismissed. Day two of the final Test continues tonight as the West Indies look to claw their way back into the contest.
