Vatican City:
Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff, made a powerful call to action during his first mass at the Vatican, urging the Catholic Church to counter the global “lack of faith.” The newly elected 267th pope, Robert Francis Prevost, warned that society is replacing faith with “technology, money, success, power, or pleasure.”
In his address, delivered in Italian, the 69-year-old emphasized the Church must act as a “beacon that illuminates the nights of this world.” Pope Leo’s ascension has been met with jubilation in the U.S. and Peru, where he served for two decades.
“A lack of faith is often tragically accompanied by the loss of meaning in life, neglect of mercy, appalling violations of human dignity, and the crisis of the family,” the pope stated.
