India Threatens to Cut Water Supply to Pakistan Over Kashmir Attack

India is considering scaling up its diversion of water from the Indus River system, which also supplies Pakistani agriculture, as retaliation for a deadly April terror attack in Indian Kashmir that claimed 26 civilian lives.

Though Pakistan has denied involvement, Indian officials have “put in abeyance” India’s participation in the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, raising alarms of environmental and geopolitical consequences in the region.

Despite a ceasefire agreement last week, tensions remain high between the two nuclear-armed neighbors amid this escalating water diplomacy row.
