TRINIDAD & TOBAGO: Man Sentenced to 12 Months for Assaulting Woman
An East Trinidad man has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour after a jury found him guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, following an attack on a woman inside his home last year.
Justice Nolan Singh imposed the sentence on David Par, after the court accepted that he assaulted the womanโwho was in a vulnerable stateโmoments after she exited a shower at his residence on May 12, 2024.
Evidence revealed the two had been socialising and drinking before returning to his home.
Par was acquitted of more serious charges, including rape, grievous sexual assault, and kidnapping. The judgeโs ruling reflected the charge on which he was found guilty.
HAITI: U.S. Ends Temporary Protected Status โ Over 500,000 Haitians Affected
The United States has announced it will end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals, effective February 3, 2026.
Following consultations with inter-agency partners, Secretary Christine Noam concluded that Haiti no longer meets the statutory requirements for TPS. The Department of Homeland Security said the decision was based on USCIS assessments and analysis from multiple U.S. agencies, determining that continued TPS โis inconsistent with U.S. national interests.โ
The move could impact over half a million Haitians, many of whom now face returning to a country overwhelmed by gang-controlled territories, severe instability, and widespread displacement.
According to the UN, 1.4 million Haitians are currently internally displaced.
The notice stated:
โIf you are an alien currently a beneficiary of TPS for Haiti, you should prepare to depart if you have no other lawful basis for remaining in the United States.โ
