Argentina: Billions in Cash Hidden Abroad — Government Eases Currency Rules

Argentina is easing its foreign currency reporting regulations to encourage citizens to bring an estimated US$271 billion in undeclared U.S. dollars — currently hidden in mattresses, safes, and offshore accounts — back into the local economy.

Presidential spokesman Emanuel Adorni announced on Thursday that Argentinians can now use undeclared dollars without being taxed on their origin. The reform aims to stabilize the weakened peso and boost economic activity ahead of key policy reforms under President Javier Milei.

The informal cash stash dwarfs even the US$20 billion loan from the IMF, and economists say even partial repatriation of these funds could significantly support the national economy.

A presidential decree will enact the rule change, with a follow-up bill to Congress to give the measure long-term legal strength.

Anguilla: Rock Farm Man Busted with Gun and Cannabis at Police Checkpoint

In Anguilla, a 29-year-old Rock Farm resident has been charged with multiple offenses after being stopped at a routine police checkpoint earlier this week.

Jahlil Scarboro was found in possession of a firearm, ammunition, and suspected cannabis, according to the Royal Anguilla Police Force. He was arraigned on Wednesday and granted EC$80,000 bail with one surety.

Authorities say the seizure is part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal firearms in local communities. The items have been secured as evidence pending forensic analysis.

St. Lucia: Man Pleads Guilty in Fatal Shooting of Antiguan Customs Officer

Over in St. Lucia, 3 years after the tragic murder of Antiguan customs officer Zerena Benjamin, her former partner has now pleaded guilty to the crime.

Dong Charery changed his plea after critical audio evidence surfaced, reportedly capturing an argument and the fatal gunshot at Benjamin’s Golden Grove residence in November 2021.

Since his arrest, Charery has been remanded at His Majesty’s Prison and will return to court on June 12 for sentencing.

Benjamin, a mother of one, was remembered across Antigua for her service and sudden loss, which shocked the small community.
