Barbados: Government to Subsidize Electric Bills and Cap Freight Amid Global Spikes

BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS — In a major move to shield citizens from the volatile global energy market, the Barbados government has announced a multi-million dollar intervention. During the 2026–27 National Budget presentation on Monday, Finance Minister Ryan Straughn outlined several relief measures to lower the cost of living.

  • Electricity Subsidy: Starting April 1, the government will subsidize half of the projected increase in electricity fuel charges for three months. This $7.9 million initiative is expected to save the average household approximately $16 per month.
  • Fuel Hedging: To further stabilize costs, the government has “locked in” fuel prices at $92 per barrel through strategic hedging, preventing Barbadians from feeling the full brunt of recent oil price surges.
  • Freight Caps: To combat rising shipping costs driven by the Middle East conflicts, customs duties on containers will be capped from next month through March 2027.
    • 20-foot containers: Capped at $3,000.
    • 40-foot containers: Capped at $6,000.
  • Future Savings: The administration also pledged to establish a $5,000 savings plan for every Barbadian child as part of a long-term economic re-industrialization strategy.

International: Israel Claims Killing of Iran’s Security Chief; Tehran Rejects De-escalation

THE MIDDLE EAST — The conflict between Israel, the United States, and Iran reached a new fever pitch on Tuesday following a series of high-profile military strikes and defiant diplomatic stances.

  • Major Assassination: Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that airstrikes overnight killed Iran’s Security Chief, Ali Larijani, and the head of the Basij militia. If confirmed, Larijani would be the most senior figure assassinated since the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei on February 28.
  • Tehran’s Response: While Iranian state media published a note from Larijani earlier on Tuesday, there has been no official confirmation of his death from Tehran. However, a senior Iranian official stated that the new Supreme Leader has rejected all ceasefire proposals, demanding that Israel and the U.S. first be “brought to their knees.”
  • Regional Fallout: Iranian forces continued strikes against Gulf neighbors, targeting transport and oil infrastructure. These persistent attacks have pushed global energy prices higher, prompting subsidy measures in countries like Barbados.
