Jamaica Reports Stable Flu Cases, Officials Urge Vigilance

Health officials in Jamaica say influenza activity remains stable, with no immediate cause for alarm, even as vaccination rates continue to lag and global health authorities warn of rising respiratory threats.

According to the Ministry of Health and Wellness, surveillance data through December 27, 2025, show that influenza-like illnesses are below seasonal levels, while severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) remain within expected ranges for this time of year.

Health and Wellness Minister Christopher Tufton said SARI hospitalisations account for less than one per cent of all admissions at sentinel sites, and there have been no reported SARI-related deaths during the 2025โ€“2026 influenza season.

Despite these reassuring indicators, the minister cautioned that flu vaccination uptake remains low and urged the public to remain vigilant, particularly as Jamaicaโ€™s influenza season runs from October through April.

Armed Robbers Target Gas Station in Trinidad and Tobago

In Trinidad and Tobago, police are investigating an armed robbery at a gas station in the St Clair area late Tuesday night.

The incident occurred around 10:08 p.m. at the NP Gas Station opposite Ellerslie Plaza in Maraval. Reports indicate that three armed men forced their way into the stationโ€™s office, stealing cash, cigarettes, and jewellery before fleeing the scene.

A 39-year-old woman from Belmont was inside the office when a cashier arrived late for duty. As the supervisor opened the door, the suspectsโ€”wearing dark clothing and masksโ€”emerged from a nearby vehicle and rushed inside. One of the men was reportedly armed with a firearm.

The suspects pushed the cashier to the ground, forced the supervisor into the office, and stole a gold chain from the woman. They also took $1,569 in cash from the register, along with an undisclosed amount kept beneath it. No serious injuries were reported.

Iran Cuts Internet Amid Widening Anti-Government Protests

Internationally, Iran was largely cut off from the outside world on Friday after authorities shut down internet access in an effort to curb escalating anti-government protests.

Videos circulating prior to the blackout showed buildings set ablaze in several cities, as demonstrations intensified across the country. Rights groups have reported dozens of protester deaths over nearly two weeks of unrest.

Iranian state television aired footage of clashes and fires, while the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that several police officers were killed overnight during the disturbances. The shutdown has drawn international concern over access to information, human rights, and the safety of civilians amid the widening unrest.
