T&T to Introduce Zones of Special Operations as State of Emergency Ends

As the State of Emergency comes to an end in the coming weeks, the Government is preparing to roll out a new crime-fighting strategy aimed at targeting criminal hotspots.

Attorney General John Jeremie has announced plans to implement Zones of Special Operations, known as ZOSOs, a legal framework that will empower law-enforcement agencies to take stronger action in high-risk communities. The initiative mirrors a similar approach used in Jamaica.

Speaking during a media briefing in Chaguanas, Jeremie explained that the initial State of Emergency was necessary to disrupt communication networks between incarcerated gang leaders and criminal operatives outside the prison system. He said the proposed ZOSO legislation is designed to address current risks through targeted interventions rather than nationwide emergency measures.

Under the new framework, law-enforcement officers would be granted expanded powers within designated zones, including enhanced search and seizure authority, curfews, and coordinated security operations. The approach also includes a social component aimed at improving community conditions as part of a broader crime-reduction strategy.

Trinidad and Tobagoโ€™s Historical Crude Oil Imports from Venezuela

Discussions continue surrounding energy cooperation between Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela, particularly the potential importation of natural gas for processing and re-export.

While current focus centres on gas resources, there was a period when Trinidad and Tobago imported significant volumes of crude oil from Venezuela, primarily to supply the now-mothballed Point-a-Pierre refinery.

In the year 2000, crude oil imports from Venezuela exceeded 18 million barrels, representing more than half of the countryโ€™s imported crude at the time. That volume was roughly equivalent to current domestic oil production levels and underscores the historical energy ties between the two neighbouring states.

International News: United States Suspends Immigrant Visa Processing

In international news, the United States Government has announced the suspension of immigrant visa processing for applicants from 75 countries, beginning January 21, 2026.

The decision forms part of a broader tightening of immigration policies and will affect individuals seeking permanent residency. Authorities clarified that the suspension does not currently apply to non-immigrant visas such as tourist, business, or student travel.

Countries impacted span regions including Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Eastern Europe. The move has sparked concern among prospective migrants and immigration advocates, who warn of delays and uncertainty for applicants already in the system.
