Haiti Moves Closer to First Presidential Elections Since 2016

Haiti has taken a major step toward restoring democratic rule after its transitional government adopted a long-awaited electoral law—an action that political analysts say finally sets the election process in motion for the French-speaking Caribbean nation.

Freenel Joseph, one of two observers on the Transitional Presidential Council (TPC), announced via the social media platform X on Monday that the adoption of the law by both the council and the cabinet marks a “decisive turning point” in the country’s transition.

The nine-member TPC, established in April 2024, is responsible for governing Haiti until elections are held. Its key duties include appointing a prime minister, forming a government, improving national security, and preparing the country for general elections now scheduled for February 2026.

The council was created amid deep political instability and rising gang violence, and is expected to guide the nation toward greater order and governance over the next year.

Jamaica Police Warn of Vehicle-Sale Scam Targeting Private Sellers

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) on Monday issued an urgent public advisory about a fraudulent scheme targeting individuals selling their motor vehicles.

According to the JCF, scammers are contacting sellers by phone while posing as police officers. The criminals falsely claim that the vehicles recently sold are stolen property. Under the guise of helping sellers avoid prosecution or reimburse the alleged buyer, the scammers demand immediate cash payments.

In some cases, unsuspecting rideshare drivers are recruited to collect the cash and deliver it to drop-off points.

The JCF is urging Jamaicans to remain vigilant, stressing that no legitimate police operation requires citizens to pay money to settle criminal matters. Citizens are warned not to send cash to anyone making such claims and to report suspicious calls immediately.

Maduro Declares Loyalty to Venezuelans Amid Rising U.S. Tensions

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Monday reaffirmed his “absolute loyalty” to the Venezuelan people amid escalating tensions with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Maduro, joined by senior government officials, addressed supporters gathered outside the presidential palace after the ruling PSUV party held a march to induct new local leaders.

Relations between Venezuela and the United States have deteriorated sharply in recent months. The Trump administration has intensified maritime operations targeting alleged drug-smuggling vessels in the Caribbean and has repeatedly threatened the possibility of expanding military actions to land.

The U.S. also recently designated the Cartel de los Soles—a group it alleges includes top Venezuelan officials, including Maduro—as a foreign terrorist organization. Maduro denies any involvement in criminal activity.
