Grenada: Opposition Slams Plan to Lower Civil Responsibility Age to 16
The Dicken Mitchell administration in Grenada is facing sharp opposition from the New National Party (NNP) over proposed legislation to lower the age of civil legal responsibility from 18 to 16. The move would allow minors to access sexual and reproductive health servicesโincluding contraceptives, STI treatment, and counselingโwithout parental consent.
Opposition Leader Emmalin Pierre said the bill would give โexcessive powerโ to ministers and allow children as young as 12 to make serious medical decisions independently.
The bill stems from the Spotlight Initiative, a UN-supported project launched in 2020 to reduce gender-based and family violence in the region.
