Norton Urges Citizens to Vote With Conscience, Slams Government’s Disconnect From Public Struggles

Presidential candidate Aubrey Norton of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) is urging Guyanese citizens to scrutinize the policies of all political parties ahead of the September 1 General and Regional Elections, emphasizing that voters deserve a leader who prioritizes their well-being over personal gain.
Speaking on Context with veteran journalist Enrico Woolford, Norton criticized the current administration for its alleged indifference to poverty and suffering, despite Guyana’s economic growth fueled by oil revenues.
“The elite up there don’t know the suffering of the Guyanese people,” Norton said. “I don’t believe they walk the pavement at night and see people sleeping on it.”
Booming Economy, Deepening Poverty
Norton highlighted the disconnect between the nation’s booming GDP and the lived reality of many Guyanese families, arguing that the Ali administration has failed to address the rising levels of poverty.
“They’re getting wealthy at the expense of the people. That is what we have to change,” Norton said.
“A lot of people are following political movements hoping to escape poverty, but the truth is—they never cared.”
Christian Support and Coalition Unity
Dr. Denise Murray, a member of the Kingdom Movement, announced her party’s alignment with the APNU coalition during the program. She expressed confidence in the leadership of Norton and his running mates, Jerreta Fernandes and Ganesh Mahipaul, saying their shared values and vision influenced her decision to join forces.
“This is a diverse coalition. It includes women and technocrats like myself. We’re proud to stand with Mr. Norton, Jerreta, and Ganesh,” she said.
Dr. Murray made a direct appeal to the Christian community, urging them to vote with conscience and uphold their democratic duty.
“I want to encourage my brothers and sisters in the Christian community—come out and vote on September 1.”
