Guyana has taken a transformative step toward modernizing education with the official launch of the Guyana Digital School, a groundbreaking online learning platform designed to expand access, improve quality, and position the country as a regional leader in digital education.
The initiative—unveiled on Friday—was described by President Irfaan Ali as a national development investment aimed not only at Guyanese learners, but also at students across the wider CARICOM region.
“The digital school we are launching today is a gateway. It is envisioned as a hub for digital learning,” President Ali said, emphasizing the project’s mission to create high-quality digital content, build globally competitive skills, and close the digital divide.
The President highlighted that transitioning to digital learning is not optional in a rapidly evolving world.
“We are accelerating the transition to digital education not because it is easy, but because it is necessary. The world cannot slow down for Guyana. Technology will not pause for us to catch up,” he stated. “We must prepare now.”
While stressing that digital tools will not replace teachers or classrooms, he noted that the platform strengthens traditional learning, offers flexibility for adult learners, and provides continuity of education during natural disasters.
Minister of Education Sonia Parag revealed that 20,368 students from Grades 10 and 11 across Guyana and the CARICOM region have already enrolled—an early indication of the platform’s regional reach and appeal.
She explained that the Digital School uses a four-quadrant learning model that integrates technology, interactive online classrooms, digital libraries, and AI-powered support tools.
“This is not an abandonment of traditional schooling,” Minister Parag emphasized. “It is the strengthening of it. It introduces new avenues for learning so that no child falls behind because of distance, circumstance, or pace.”
With regional backing, advanced digital infrastructure, and thousands of students already registered, the Guyana Digital School is poised to become one of the Caribbean’s most innovative education models.
