Guyana and Suriname Presidents Advance Bilateral Agenda.

President Irfaan Ali of Guyana and Her Excellency Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, President of the Republic of Suriname, met over the weekend in Nickerie to review bilateral relations and chart a strengthened path of cooperation between the two nations.
In a joint statement, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to constructing the long-anticipated Quarantine River Bridge, describing it as a โsignature projectโ with the power to transform cross-border connectivity and boost trade, investment, and regional integration.
โThere will be timely advancement of this project, recognizing the transformational role it can play,โ the statement read.
Border & Diplomacy
The two presidents also agreed that border matters will continue to be settled peacefully through diplomacy, dialogue, and adherence to international law. To this end, both sides pledged to reconvene the Suriname-Guyana Joint Border Commission before the end of 2025.
Food Security & Agriculture
Agriculture, fisheries, and food security dominated the agenda, with both leaders highlighting the opportunity for Guyana and Suriname to become major food producers for CARICOM.
โWe both have an enormous opportunity in contributing to food security in CARICOM and in building out an ecosystem that positions our countries as regional leaders,โ President Ali emphasized.
Regional Connectivity & Energy
The meeting also touched on expanding regional ferry services, aimed at strengthening people-to-people ties and commercial activity between the two countries. Additionally, both leaders recommitted to collaboration under the Strategic Dialogue and Cooperation Platform (SDCP), particularly in areas of economic growth and energy security.
The talks concluded with a shared vision of deepening bilateral cooperation, rooted in peaceful dialogue and regional advancement.
