GECOM BEGINS 2026 CLAIMS AND OBJECTIONS EXERCISE; AG CALLS ON OPPOSITION TO REMOVE “BLOAT”

Guyana’s 2026 Claims and Objections exercise is now underway, with the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) opening the statutory process aimed at ensuring a clean, accurate, and credible Official List of Electors.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall has urged political parties, civil society groups, and individual citizens to actively participate in the exercise, stressing that the responsibility for maintaining the integrity of the voters’ list rests with all stakeholders.

According to the Attorney General, the Claims and Objections period provides a lawful mechanism to correct inaccuracies, including the removal of the names of deceased persons, migrants, or individuals otherwise ineligible to vote. He emphasized that the process is particularly important in addressing what he described as “bloat” on the voters’ list, an issue that has long been a point of contention in Guyana’s electoral landscape.

Nandlall called on opposition parties to fully engage the process rather than rely on public criticism, noting that the law provides clear avenues for objections, corrections, and verification. He maintained that a transparent and inclusive approach is essential to safeguarding public confidence in upcoming elections.

The exercise allows eligible citizens who are not yet registered to submit inclusion claims, while also permitting objections to entries believed to be incorrect. GECOM has indicated that the process will be conducted nationwide, with verification officers available to receive submissions in accordance with electoral regulations.

Election officials have reiterated that the Claims and Objections exercise is a routine but critical component of electoral preparation, designed to strengthen democratic accountability and prevent disputes ahead of polling day.

The Attorney General reaffirmed that a credible voters’ list benefits all political actors and voters, underscoring that participation in the process is essential to ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections in Guyana.
