From pressure to purpose and disappointment to determination — 24-year-old Saskia Hinds, a first-generation attorney, has fulfilled her late father’s wish of upholding the scales of justice, joining the local bar on Wednesday, October 29, 2025.

A Legacy Rooted in Love and Sacrifice

Resilient, determined, and deeply grounded in faith, Hinds hails from Campbellville, Georgetown, and Blankenburg, West Coast Demerara.
She describes her journey as one marked by humility and perseverance — guided by her mother, a teacher, and inspired by her late father, a taxi driver from Berbice.

“My father was born in Berbice and never had the chance for formal education because he had to take on adult responsibilities at a young age,” she shared.
“This achievement — becoming an attorney — is dedicated to him. His faith, sacrifices, and love continue to inspire me to serve with integrity in this honourable profession.”

Though her father once dreamed of her attending Queen’s College, Hinds instead earned a place at St. Rose’s High School after scoring 514 marks at the National Grade Six Assessment in 2013.
Just two months into secondary school, tragedy struck — her father passed away.

“Losing him felt like being robbed — robbed of his love, his guidance, and the comfort of knowing he’d see the person I’d grow into,” she recalled.

Her mother became her “beacon of hope,” embodying strength and perseverance as she raised Saskia and her brother alone.

Turning Disappointment Into Determination

Hinds admitted that her path to law was not planned. Initially drawn to accounting, she was disappointed when her preferred business stream was unavailable in secondary school.

“When I didn’t get the stream I wanted, I was disappointed — but that disappointment became my turning point,” she said.
“One day my uncle asked what I wanted to do, and without hesitation, I said, ‘Law.’ I can’t explain where that came from — it felt like a calling.”

With her uncle’s mentorship, she excelled at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams with nine passes, pursued an Associate of Arts in Humanities at The Bishop’s High School, and later achieved success at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE), graduating in 2020.

A Journey of Resilience and Faith

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Hinds pursued her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) at the University of Guyana, adapting to online classes while building lasting friendships. Despite moments of self-doubt, she said her father’s unwavering belief in her kept her grounded.

“Every time I questioned myself, I remembered how much my father believed in me — that gave me strength,” she reflected.

Her next step took her to Trinidad and Tobago, where she pursued a Legal Education Certificate at Hugh Wooding Law School. The transition was both emotional and demanding.

“Leaving home was bittersweet,” she said. “It was my first time away from my family — just my mom and brother — but I reminded myself this was the step needed to fulfill my father’s dream and my mother’s sacrifice.”

She recounted the physical toll of her daily commute from San Juan to St. Augustine, sometimes taking six different vehicles to reach classes, but she pressed on.

“Even when I was exhausted, I reminded myself why I was doing it. Every sacrifice and every struggle brought me closer to my goal.”

Faith, Family, and Fulfillment

Now a proud attorney-at-law, Hinds credits her success to faith, family, and perseverance.

“My journey was not just about earning a certificate — it was about gaining resilience. Every challenge was part of God’s plan, and His timing was perfect.”

She expressed deep gratitude to her mother, brother, uncle, and close friends for their prayers and support throughout her journey.

“This victory is not mine alone — it belongs to my family, especially my parents. With God, all things are possible.”
