Diwali Motorcade Illuminates East Coast with Unity and Celebration

The East Coast corridor came alive Sunday night as thousands of Guyanese lined the route from Kitty Seawall to La Bonne Intention (LBI), celebrating the 51st annual Diwali Motorcade — a dazzling display of light, devotion, and cultural pride.

The spectacular procession, featuring colorful floats, glowing diyas, and traditional music, culminated at the LBI Community Ground, where the evening continued with song, dance, and awards for the most creative displays.

Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, reflected on the festival’s enduring legacy, noting that the event — conceptualized by her father, the late Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud — was built on the principles of unity, peace, and fraternity.

“It’s such a rich legacy that has lasted for more than five decades, and we continue it admirably,” Dr. Persaud said, calling the motorcade “perhaps the single biggest event in our nation.”

She also reminded the audience of the spiritual meaning of Diwali, celebrating Goddess Lakshmi as a symbol of prosperity and spiritual connection.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali, who attended the celebrations, commended the Dharmic Sabha for its work in preserving culture and empowering youth.

“This is not just a spiritual moment; it’s a celebration of our identity and our unity,” President Ali declared, adding that the event is “a rich tradition unique to Guyana that we should all be proud of.”

The night concluded with vibrant cultural performances, fireworks, and a shared sense of harmony, as Guyanese of all backgrounds came together to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness and unity over division.
