CXC SOUNDS ALARM ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN CLASSROOMS

The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) continued its regional engagement series in Guyana from October 8 to 11, bringing together more than 300 educators, students, employers, and stakeholders to discuss the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education and assessment.

According to Dr. Wayne Wesley, CXC Registrar and CEO, the sessions aim to guide the responsible integration of AI technologies across the region’s education systems, while maintaining fairness, transparency, and academic integrity.

During a courtesy call on Minister of Education, Hon. Sonia Parag, and senior ministry officials, Dr. Wesley provided updates on CXC’s transformational initiatives, including the introduction of the Caribbean Targeted Education Certificate and the modularized qualification framework. These initiatives are designed to expand access to certification for out-of-school youth, part-time students, and adult learners.

Minister Parag reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to improving student performance through its Digital Schools Initiative, which promotes a technology-enabled learning environment. She welcomed CXC’s ongoing innovations, noting that they align with Guyana’s strategic policy goals for education reform.

Dr. Wesley emphasized that CXC continues to align its programs with the education policy objectives of its member states, ensuring that learning and assessment evolve in tandem with global technological shifts.

Meanwhile, CXC Director of Operations, Dr. Nicole Manning, who has been leading the AI integration initiative, expressed gratitude for the strong regional response to the stakeholder sessions, describing them as “a vital step toward building a smarter, more inclusive education ecosystem.”

The regional stakeholder series, which began in September in Barbados, has since reached Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and the OECS, and will conclude with a virtual webinar on October 17.

Looking ahead, CXC will host a Regional Educational Conference in Jamaica from October 28 to 30, under the theme “Navigating the Digital Age: Rethinking Teaching, Learning, and Assessment.” The conference, held in collaboration with Jamaica’s Ministry of Education, Youth, Skills, and Information, will bring together leading Caribbean educators to chart the region’s path toward education transformation in the digital era.
