HGP Nightly News – More than 235 kilograms of cocaine and over 726 kilograms of cannabis were seized in Guyana in 2025, according to the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU), which says cocaine and cannabis remain the country’s two dominant drug threats. CANU also reported smaller recoveries of ecstasy (674 grams), methamphetamine (83 grams) and cannabis products (9.16 grams).
Breaking the figures down regionally, CANU said Region Four recorded the highest cocaine seizures at 172.8 kilograms, while Region Six recorded the highest cannabis seizures at 576 kilograms. The agency noted that synthetic drugs appeared in small but increasing quantities, an emerging trend it says will require closer monitoring.
CANU also pointed to a key year-on-year comparison: it said the 2025 cocaine quantity represents a major reduction compared with 2024, linking that decline to a single exceptionally large cocaine seizure in Region One the previous year, which significantly inflated 2024 totals.
With those trends in mind, CANU said it formally launched Guyana’s National Early Warning System (EWS) in 2025, aimed at strengthening the country’s ability to detect, assess and respond to new psychoactive substances and other evolving drug threats. The agency said the system integrates inputs from law enforcement, forensic services, health partners and analysts to support rapid alerts and evidence-based interventions aligned with regional and international approaches.
On the enforcement front, CANU said 2025 saw intensified intelligence-led interdiction operations targeting trafficking routes, organised networks and high-risk ports and border points. It also reported stronger inter-agency coordination and expanded regional and international cooperation, framing Guyana’s posture as that of an active “regional disruptor” rather than a passive transit point.
