PPP/C Submits Candidate List Amid Controversy and Confidence

The Guyana Elections Commission on Monday officially approved the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) list of candidates for the upcoming general and regional elections.
President Irfaan Ali, speaking after the party’s submission, described the lineup as a team of competent and winning candidates.
“The PPP has always put forward lists that demonstrate who we are and the values we stand for,” Ali stated.
PPP General Secretary Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo echoed this confidence, stating:
“Any impartial person in this country who had to choose a political party with a clear conscience would choose the People’s Progressive Party.”
Among the notable names on the list are:
- Former Deputy Speaker Dr. Asha Kissoon
- Former magistrate and ex-AFC parliamentarian Geeta Chandan-Edmond
- And, controversially, Nigel Dharamlall, the former Minister of Local Government.
Dharamlall resigned from office in 2023 after serious rape allegations were made against him by a teenage girl. The allegations were later withdrawn under circumstances that raised eyebrows nationwide, with Nightly News previously reporting that criminal charges were under consideration at the time.
Despite the party’s projected confidence, some political observers note that the PPP appears visibly unsettled by the growing traction of the Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) movements, both of which are gaining momentum among young and first-time voters.
