HGP Nightly News – The A Partnership for National Unity has broken its silence on the latest political crossovers to the governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic, saying former members who now sit on local councils should resign immediately.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Tuesday, APNU said while every citizen has the democratic right to choose their political home, councillors who were elected on the strength of APNU votes cannot fairly remain in those seats after switching allegiance to the PPP/C.
The coalition argued that those local government seats were secured through the support of APNU voters and should not now be used to advance a different political agenda.
According to APNU, the recent departures did not come as a surprise. The coalition said the intentions of the former members had already been made clear through their previous public comments and actions.
APNU suggested that the crossovers were linked to dissatisfaction among persons who were not selected for parliamentary positions. The coalition said its political work has never been about personal titles or office, but about serving people, standing on principle, and defending the country’s interest.
The party warned that any councillor who crossed over to the PPP/C but continues to occupy a seat won through APNU support would be making a clear statement about the self-serving nature of their current political direction.
Despite the fallout, APNU said it will not be distracted by the defections. The coalition maintained that it remains focused on defending the interests of Guyanese and carrying out its political responsibilities.
The statement ended with APNU wishing the former members well, even as it made clear that the coalition expects them to give up the council seats they now hold.
