APNU BLASTS POLICE FOR TAKING NO ACTION AGAINST TRAMPLING TOSHAO

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – A peaceful community event in Wikki/Calcuni turned political and chaotic over the weekend when the village Toshao tore down and stomped on flags belonging to the opposition We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party.

According to A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), uniformed police officers witnessed the act but took no action—something the party says is deeply troubling. The WIN party, led by businessman Azruddin Mohamed, was attending the event when the incident occurred.

APNU, in a statement, described the Toshao’s behavior as a “violent disruption” and questioned why law enforcement did nothing in response. “That no one was cautioned, detained, or even questioned speaks volumes,” APNU said. “It raises the disturbing question: has a new and unofficial policing policy taken effect—one where political allegiance determines enforcement?

”APNU emphasized that the incident wasn’t an isolated case of political aggression. Instead, they argue it’s part of a wider trend that threatens the fairness of the upcoming September 1 elections.

“Reports of harassment, intimidation, and disruption of opposition activities are now coming in from Essequibo, Berbice, and interior communities,” the party noted. “The silence and inaction of the authorities in the face of these repeated transgressions suggest not incompetence, but complicity.

”Calling the situation dangerous for democracy, APNU is urging an immediate investigation. The party is also appealing to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), and international election observers to monitor what they believe is a worsening climate for opposition voices.

“Democracy cannot function where the state’s protective agencies are seen to operate as political shields,” the statement added. “The integrity of the September 1 elections—and the broader democratic process—must not be sacrificed at the altar of partisan loyalty.

”Neither the police nor GECOM has issued a response to the allegations.
