Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Nigel Hughes, has strongly condemned what he describes as a clear escalation of Venezuelan aggression following three separate attacks on Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ranks patrolling the Cuyuni River this week.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Hughes said:
“This emerging pattern is clear and undeniable. It shows that a rogue state in Venezuela is waging an undeclared war against Guyana.”
Hughes accused Venezuelan state actors of orchestrating the attacks — despite operating in civilian clothing — and described the actions as part of a broader effort to stage a military operation in Guyana’s Essequibo region ahead of Venezuela’s controversial May 25 regional elections, which the ICJ has rejected.
Hughes Demands Action
The AFC leader outlined a firm diplomatic response, urging the Guyana Government to:
- Expel Venezuela’s ambassador to Guyana
- Recall Guyana’s ambassador from Caracas
- Appeal to the United Nations Security Council for targeted sanctions
He also called for the immediate reconvening of Guyana’s bipartisan Border and National Security Committee and the Foreign Relations Committee of the National Assembly, stating that cross-party collaboration is essential in the face of rising threats.
“The government must show firm resolve. The AFC stands ready to support all fair and reasonable efforts to safeguard our sovereignty.”
The GDF confirmed on Thursday that its ranks came under fire three times within 24 hours in the Eteringbang-Makapa area of the Cuyuni River, which borders Venezuela. Fortunately, no soldiers were injured.
The attackers were reportedly armed men in civilian clothes situated on the Venezuelan shore. The GDF noted it responded with measured restraint while continuing regular patrols to protect national territory.
HGP Nightly News will continue to track updates on the Guyana-Venezuela border tensions and the government’s diplomatic responses.
