HGP Nightly News – A reported $6 billion tax debt has been slashed to as little as $25 million, triggering a furious response from Attorney General Anil Nandlall, who is demanding an investigation into the Georgetown City Council’s decision involving the business arm of the PNC.
The tax debt was reportedly owed by Maikwak Limited, the property and business-holding arm of the People’s National Congress, which operates Congress Place in Sophia.
According to reports, the company previously owed the Georgetown Mayor and City Council billions of dollars in rates and taxes.
It now reportedly owes between $20 million and $25 million following a tax write-off approved by the council.
Nandlall has described the reported decision as a serious conflict of interest, questioning how a council dominated by PNC politicians could approve a massive reduction in a debt owed by the party’s own business arm.
“This has to be investigated; this amounts to a financial crime,” Nandlall said during his Issues in the News programme.
The Attorney General also questioned the legality of the decision and accused the council of effectively choosing one taxpayer, allegedly its political ally, for preferential treatment.
Nandlall is now calling for the circumstances surrounding the reported write-off to be fully investigated.
The reported figures and allegations have not been independently verified from the information provided.
