GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – As Guyana and Cuba commemorate over five decades of diplomatic relations, the profound impact of their partnership has been brought into sharp focus. Since the establishment of formal ties on December 8, 1972, the collaboration has evolved from high-level diplomacy into a life-changing medical alliance that has restored sight to thousands of Guyanese citizens.

In a recent interview with Nightly News, His Excellency Jorge Francisco Soberón Luis, the Cuban Ambassador to Guyana, revealed that approximately 1,900 Cuban medical professionals have served in Guyana over the years. This dedicated workforce has performed more than 25,000 eye surgeries, a cornerstone of the historic “Mission Miracle” initiative that significantly enhanced the nation’s healthcare capacity.

Beyond the Operating Room: Innovation and Expertise

Ambassador Luis emphasized that the partnership extends far beyond surgical statistics. The real value, he noted, lies in the continuous exchange of specialized knowledge, particularly in the management of tropical diseases and chronic illnesses.

Cuba is currently sharing its medical breakthroughs with the Guyanese healthcare system to combat some of the region’s most pressing health challenges:

  • Diabetes Care: Deployment of Cuban medical products specifically designed to prevent amputations in diabetic patients.
  • Oncology: Introduction of Cuban-developed vaccines against lung cancer and other malignancies.
  • Infrastructural Support: While health remains the priority, the Ambassador noted that Cuba has also assisted Guyana’s construction industry during critical labor shortages.

Resilience Amidst Challenges

Despite the successes of the mission, Ambassador Luis addressed the mounting difficulties facing his home country. He spoke candidly about the severe impact of the U.S. blockade, specifically highlighting a recent fuel blockade. These external pressures have created dire conditions for Cuba’s most vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and hospital patients, yet the nation remains committed to its internationalist medical missions.

A Legacy of Solidarity

The 54-year journey between Georgetown and Havana serves as a regional model for South-South cooperation. Through the training of Guyanese doctors in Cuba and the deployment of the Cuban Medical Brigade to Guyana’s remote and urban areas, the two nations have fortified a medical infrastructure that has saved countless lives.

As both countries look toward the future, the enduring strength of this bond proves that bilateral cooperation can transcend political shifts to deliver tangible, long-term benefits for the people.
