HGP Nightly News – APNU is questioning whether Guyana’s rapid economic growth is creating enough opportunities for young people to build stable lives at home.
In a statement on youth and national development, the party raised concerns about employment, wages, housing and access to opportunities.
It argued that many graduates are unable to find jobs in the fields they studied.
Others, it said, are leaving Guyana or accepting work outside of their qualifications.
APNU also raised concerns about what it described as a growing perception of political patronage.
The party said young people should not feel pressured to support a political party or develop political connections to secure jobs, contracts or appointments.
“A person’s qualifications should matter more than their political affiliation,” the statement said.
APNU also questioned whether salaries are keeping pace with Guyana’s rising cost of living.
It pointed to the cost of food, rent, transportation, housing and starting a business.
The party argued that Guyana’s oil wealth should eventually be reflected in the everyday lives of young people.
It said development should not be judged solely by GDP, oil production or government revenue.
Instead, APNU wants greater focus on wages, employment, purchasing power and opportunities to build wealth.
The party is calling for a national framework covering youth employment, entrepreneurship, affordable housing and access to financing.
It also wants greater transparency in public employment and appointments.
APNU maintained that young people should be able to build successful lives in Guyana without sacrificing their political independence.
“Guyana belongs to all of us. Its natural resources belong to all of us. Its opportunities must therefore be accessible to all of us,” the statement said.
