HGP Nightly News – The We Invest in Nationhood Party has voiced strong concern following reports of sexual assault involving a male teacher and nine schoolgirls at a city school. The organisation described the allegations as a serious breach of trust, noting that educators are entrusted not only with teaching but also with safeguarding the well-being of children.
The teacher at the centre of the allegations has been placed on administrative leave. However, reports have surfaced that he attempted to contact the students involved and allegedly threatened them, raising fears of further trauma and possible interference with the ongoing investigation.
WIN has called for a full, independent investigation by the Guyana Police Force and the Child Care and Protection Agency, with oversight from the school’s Board of Governors. The organisation also urged the Ministry of Education to act decisively, stressing the need for stronger child protection measures in schools.
In its statement, WIN emphasised the importance of counselling and support for affected students, as well as clear communication between authorities and parents. The group underscored that a review of child protection policies and reporting systems is urgently needed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Ministry of Education confirmed that it was informed of the allegations on Friday, March 13, 2026. In line with established Standard Operating Procedures, the accused teacher was immediately placed on administrative leave. Between March 13 and 17, the Welfare Department met with the parents of the affected students, issuing referral letters to the Child Care and Protection Agency. Each student is required to undergo a forensic interview, one of which has already been completed.
The Ministry stated unequivocally that, contrary to claims circulating on social media, there has been no delay in the investigative process. It reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all procedures are followed and that the welfare and protection of students remain paramount.
