GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — As Guyana prepares to mark its 60th Independence Anniversary, the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) political party has launched an ambitious alternative calendar of activities to run alongside national celebrations. Under the theme “Rooted in Our Identity, Rising in Destiny,” the party is rolling out a six-week program designed to shift the focus from mere festivities to deep national reflection and the restoration of “dignity and national pride.”

The initiative was officially unveiled by WIN General Secretary and Member of Parliament Odessa Primus, who emphasized that the Diamond Jubilee must be a catalyst for reclaiming the Guyanese spirit.

Beyond the Party: Six Weeks of Reflection

MP Primus informed the media and online viewers that the WIN calendar is not intended to compete with government festivities, but rather to provide a space for “storytelling, education, and national reflection.”

  • Restoring Dignity: Primus noted that the Diamond Jubilee is an opportunity to examine the sacrifices made for sovereignty. “This initiative seeks to restore dignity and national pride… our independence is more than a date on the calendar, it is our sacrifice and resilience,” she stated.
  • National Reach: Programs are scheduled across all 10 administrative regions, focusing on community-level engagement rather than centralized Georgetown events.
  • Cultural Reclamation: The six weeks will feature a heavy emphasis on traditional Guyanese life, including the promotion of folk songs, national dishes, and the revival of childhood games that have defined generations.

The “Dawn of a Nation” Production

The pinnacle of the six-week schedule will be a multi-staged grand production titled “The Dawn of a Nation: Guyana’s 60th.”

  • The Showcase: This landmark production will blend theatre, music, and dance to chronicle Guyana’s journey from colonial struggle to modern destiny.
  • Dialogue on Nationhood: Primus highlighted that the production is intended to create spaces for dialogue on “values and the responsibilities of citizens,” challenging Guyanese to reflect on “who we are and who we are becoming.”

Defining Our Own Destiny

For the WIN party, the Diamond Jubilee represents a critical junction in Guyana’s history. As the nation sits on the cusp of immense wealth, MP Primus’ message is that economic growth must be anchored by a strong sense of self. By engaging the youth through essay competitions and the elderly through storytelling, the party hopes to bridge the generational gap and ensure that the “Diamond Jubilee” leaves a legacy of unity that lasts long after the fireworks have faded.
