HGP Nightly News – A 61-year-old physically challenged woman died early Tuesday morning after a fire tore through her home at No. 2 Settlement, Blairmont, West Bank Berbice, while she was reportedly alone inside.
The dead woman has been identified as Bibi Ramprashad, also known as “Zeena.”
Ramprashad relied on a wheelchair for mobility after suffering complications linked to a diabetic foot condition. At the time of the fire, her husband, 65-year-old Looknauth Ramprashad, also known as “Prame,” was reportedly working in the backlands of the community.
According to Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald, the Guyana Fire Service received the report at approximately 5:05 a.m. Firefighters from the Onverwagt Fire Station were immediately dispatched to the scene.
By the time help arrived, the fire had already destroyed the house. Ramprashad did not survive.
The circumstances have made the tragedy even more painful for relatives and residents, as the woman’s physical condition would have made it difficult for her to escape without assistance.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what caused the blaze.
The early morning fire has left the Blairmont community in mourning, with investigators now working to establish how the woman became trapped inside the burning home.
