STABROEK MARKET FACING HEALTH CRISIS AMID WIN’S VISIT

Vendors operating at Stabroek Market have raised serious concerns about poor sanitation, drainage, and security, describing conditions at the country’s largest market as a growing public health crisis.

The complaints were voiced during a weekend visit by presumptive Leader of the Opposition Azruddin Mohamed, accompanied by fellow Members of Parliament Dwight Hicken and Tabitha Saruhali of We Invest in Nationhood (WIN).

Vendors told the visiting parliamentarians that the market’s drainage system is in urgent need of desilting, with numerous drains clogged by debris and sediment. According to them, the blocked drains result in stagnant water, persistent puddles, and foul odours, creating unhygienic conditions that affect both vendors and customers.

They also pointed to piles of uncollected garbage in and around the market area, including sections near the Parliament Building, warning that the accumulation poses serious health risks. Vendors said the situation has persisted despite repeated complaints to the relevant authorities.

In addition to sanitation issues, vendors raised concerns about inadequate security within the market and the lack of functional washroom facilities. They reported that external washrooms have been non-operational since February 2025, leaving vendors, shoppers, and visitors without proper sanitation options.

Several vendors expressed frustration, noting that inspections and visits by officials have not resulted in lasting improvements. They argued that conditions at Stabroek Market not only undermine livelihoods but also threaten public health in one of Georgetown’s busiest commercial hubs.

Members of the WIN delegation acknowledged the concerns and said the issues highlighted point to the need for urgent intervention, improved maintenance, and stronger accountability from the authorities responsible for managing the market.

The situation at Stabroek Market has once again reignited calls for a comprehensive rehabilitation and management plan to address sanitation, drainage, security, and basic amenities, as vendors continue to operate under what they describe as unacceptable conditions.
