SAWMILL FIRE CONTAINED, BUT OFFICIALS ARE MONITORING CARBON LEVELS

Top government officials, including Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, visited Linden on Tuesday to assess the damage and meet with affected workers following a massive fire that engulfed a sawmill in Amelia’s Ward on April 9.

The fire, which sent plumes of smoke across the area, caused extensive damage to the facility—reportedly affecting livelihoods, machinery, and operations critical to the local timber industry.

Prime Minister Phillips led a delegation comprising officials from the Ministry of Public Works, the Guyana Forestry Commission, and local government representatives, who met with the sawmill’s management and workers to better understand the extent of the loss.

“We are here to listen, assess, and respond. The government stands ready to support those affected and ensure the necessary systems are in place to help rebuild,” the Prime Minister assured.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, early reports suggest it may have started during a late shift and quickly spread due to the combustible materials on site.

Authorities have pledged a multi-agency response to provide short-term relief and long-term recovery support to affected employees and businesses.
