Saipem completes first complex subsea structure ever built in Guyana

Saipem has announced the completion of the first-ever complex subsea structure manufactured in Guyana – a landmark achievement for the country’s growing offshore energy sector.

The structure, known as a Pipeline End Termination (PLET), was built at the Vreed-en-Hoop Logistics Base (VEHSI). It will be installed 2,000 meters below sea level at the Uaru field to connect pipelines and re-inject gas into the reservoir, preventing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.

Officials say the milestone was made possible through extensive local training programs, creating jobs and building skills in a highly specialized subsea industry. At a ceremony marking the event, key figures included ExxonMobil Guyana President Alistair Routledge, Local Content Secretariat Director Michael Munroe, and Saipem Country Manager Gianluigi Della Rosa, who reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Guyana’s sustainable development.

Saipem has operated in Guyana since 2018 and now manages three major sites, employing more than 250 people—80% of whom are Guyanese. The company continues to collaborate with ExxonMobil on several offshore projects, including Liza Phases 1 & 2, Payara, Yellowtail, Uaru, and Whiptail.

This milestone underscores Guyana’s growing role in deepwater subsea engineering and its potential as a hub for sustainable energy development.
