GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – President Dr. Irfaan Ali, speaking ahead of the United for Biodiversity initiative on Friday, declared that Guyana remains a global exemplar in preserving biodiversity, despite the world having lost more than 50% of its biodiversity over the past five decades.

In a passionate address, the Head of State said it is time for the global community to stop treating biodiversity as an afterthought and begin integrating it into the core of climate action and policy design.

“We must find policy mechanisms. We must find market mechanisms to support and safeguard our biodiversity—here in Guyana and around the world,” Ali said.

The president highlighted that Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) is already setting the tone globally, offering a viable model that pairs economic prosperity with environmental protection.

“We don’t just make pledges—we create products, mechanisms, and formulas. Our carbon credits initiative is proof of how biodiversity can be monetized sustainably,” he noted.

Guyana’s LCDS framework emphasizes sustainable growth while protecting forests and ecosystems, positioning the country as a leader in climate innovation. Ali said this strategy builds resilience, generates wealth, and expands infrastructure—all without compromising natural heritage.

Key Highlights:

  • Biodiversity as Climate Strategy: Ali urged the global south and developed nations alike to put biodiversity at the center of their climate policies.
  • Global Recognition: The outcomes of Guyana’s upcoming Global Biodiversity Alliance Summit (July 23–25, 2025) will inform global discussions at the UN Climate Conference (COP) in Brazil.
  • Strategic Alliances: Guyana will collaborate closely with Brazil and other regional allies to push biodiversity to the top of the COP agenda.

The president reiterated that biodiversity is not only a moral obligation but a strategic economic asset, and Guyana stands ready to help the world understand how forest-rich nations can lead by example.
