Following a meeting at State House on Monday with United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Joseph Humire, President Irfaan Ali reaffirmed Guyana’s commitment to strengthening defense and security collaboration with the U.S.

Speaking on the sidelines of the swearing-in ceremony for Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, President Ali described the engagement as part of ongoing cooperation.

“It’s just reinforcing that collaboration, looking at areas we will expand, and of course we’ve had many training programs with the U.S., and we are looking at expanding training programs here in Guyana,” he said.

The president highlighted that regional security was also a key focus, noting Guyana’s role in combating transnational crimes such as drug trafficking, human trafficking, and smuggling.

“We support our partners as they support us in fighting these illicit activities,” Ali stressed.

During the meeting, President Ali underscored that safeguarding Guyana’s sovereignty and defense remains a central priority. On Sunday, during his inaugural address, he pledged to build the strongest and most modern defense system in Guyana’s history — one designed to protect sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The president added that his government is committed to deepening partnerships with friendly nations, strengthening security cooperation, and upholding international law, including the peaceful settlement of disputes.

He further emphasized that national security also requires modernizing the police, prison, and fire services with the right tools, training, and resources to enhance professionalism, efficiency, and public trust.

“In this way, Guyana will stand strong, stable, and secure,” the president concluded.
