The newly acquired ferry, MV Konawaruk, was officially commissioned over the weekend, marking a major boost to transportation, commerce, and connectivity along the Parika to Supenaam route. Hundreds of commuters turned out to experience the vessel’s inaugural journey, underscoring the importance of the ferry service to daily life and economic activity.

Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, who delivered brief remarks at the commissioning ceremony, described the new ferry as an indispensable lifeline that will support commerce and trade across the Essequibo River and help power Guyana’s prosperity for generations to come. He noted that the vessel will enhance mobility for passengers and businesses while improving reliability along one of the country’s most critical transport corridors.

As part of the operational improvements accompanying the commissioning, an additional later daily trip has been introduced. Previously, the last ferry departure was at 3:00 p.m., but the expanded schedule is expected to provide greater flexibility for commuters, traders, and residents who rely heavily on the route.

Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill highlighted that the MV Konawaruk will significantly improve comfort and efficiency for passengers, while stimulating increased commercial activity in Regions Three and Seven. He said the new vessel will contribute meaningfully to improving the quality of life for residents in these regions and support broader national development.

Meanwhile, Director General of the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), Captain Steven Thomas, spoke about the extensive due diligence undertaken to acquire the ferry. He outlined the vessel’s journey to Guyana and emphasized its strategic importance to the country’s maritime sector, noting that the MV Konawaruk meets modern safety and operational standards.

The commissioning of the new ferry represents another step in the government’s efforts to modernize transportation infrastructure, improve inter-regional connectivity, and support economic growth across Guyana.
