Minister Priya Manickchand Engages NDCs to Advance Local Governance Vision

Newly sworn-in Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, on Wednesday began a series of regional visits with an engagement at the Eccles/Ramsburg NDC office.
During her visit, Minister Manickchand interacted with staff carrying out essential duties, including community cleanup, tax and rate collection, and distribution of the cash grant. She emphasized that the work of NDCs must reflect the standards and aspirations of the communities they serve.
“We had a little chat about how NDCs should function, how this one must function, and how even in this yard and office we must present what we want the community to look like,” Minister Manickchand told reporters.
Her discussions with the NDC overseer also centered on how councils should operate more effectively and how their physical spaces must set the tone for community pride and development.
This outreach is part of a broader initiative to engage all seven NDCs in the region, ensuring that President Irfaan Ali’s vision for strengthened local governance is clearly communicated.
“That’s going to be happening across the country. I intend to meet with all seven NDCs to express what His Excellency President Ali wants of local governance,” the Minister added.
Acknowledging that there is significant work ahead, Manickchand reaffirmed her ministry’s commitment to tackling challenges and improving community life across Guyana.
