LILIENDAAL PUMP STATION FINALLY COMPLETED AND TO BE COMMISSIONED DURING EASTER PERIOD.

By Antonio Dey | HGPTV Nightly Newsroom

After nearly two years of delays, the much-anticipated Liliendaal Pump Station on the East Coast of Demerara is finally set to be commissioned during the Easter period. This update comes from Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha, who confirmed the development to HGPTV Nightly News.

Originally scheduled for commissioning in February, the project faced setbacks—although Minister Mustapha did not provide specific reasons for the delay.

Funded by the World Bank through the Ministry of Agriculture’s Agriculture Sector Development Unit (ASDU), the pump station was completed at a final cost of $1.4 billion.

Key highlights of the project include:

  • Two state-of-the-art drainage pumps, each capable of moving 4.3 cubic metres of water per second
  • Independent certification by Florida-based auditing firm SGD North America, ensuring compliance with government standards
  • A first-of-its-kind engineering feature in Guyana—discharge pipes running beneath the Liliendaal Public Road

The construction was undertaken by General Engineering Supplies as part of the wider Guyana Flood Risk Management initiative, aimed at reducing flood vulnerability in coastal communities.

Residents and businesses in the area are hopeful that this critical infrastructure will help mitigate seasonal flooding, especially during the rainy season.
