IS MAE THOMAS STILL BEING PAID BY THE GOVERNMENT?ALL GS JAGDEO SAYS IS SHE WON’T BE AN ELECTIONS CANDIDATE FOR THE PPP

Sanctioned PPP Member Mae Thomas Will Not Be on 2025 Election List, Says Jagdeo

There is confirmation tonight from Vice President and General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), Bharrat Jagdeo, that Mae Thomas, a senior party member recently sanctioned by the United States government, will not be a candidate for the upcoming September 1, 2025 General and Regional Elections.

“The way I see it… no, she will not be on the list,” Jagdeo stated, adding that he does not believe Thomas intends to contest anyway.

Political parties vying to participate in the elections must submit their lists of candidates by July 14, officially designated Nomination Day by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

When asked whether Thomas—who has been sent on leave—is still receiving a government salary, Jagdeo declined to provide details.

While distancing himself from any administrative decision, Jagdeo appeared to defend Thomas to some extent.

“Please don’t make me the issue here… You have a big sanctioned man for 10,000 kilograms of gold that caused Mae to get sanctioned—and now it’s poor Mae you’re going after, and the old crooks get a pass,” he remarked, referencing ongoing allegations related to Muhammad’s Enterprise.

According to the U.S. State Department, Thomas misused her public office to facilitate government contracts, firearm permits, and passport approvals in favor of Muhammad’s Enterprise. The alleged abuses were among the reasons she was sanctioned under U.S. anti-corruption statutes.

In 2023, Thomas was reportedly intercepted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Miami while en route to China. During a secondary inspection, her phone was seized, and her U.S. visa was revoked, a signal of growing scrutiny from Washington.

While she remains under investigation, her political future with the PPP appears uncertain—if not altogether finished.
