President Irfaan Ali has announced that residents of Hydronie, East Bank Essequibo, can expect a new ultra-deep well by the end of 2025 to address the persistent issue of low water pressure in the community.
During a recent engagement with residents, the President acknowledged the aging infrastructure of the existing water source and said the government has already mobilized a contractor to begin the drilling of the new well.
“We have a contractor in place, and we are now in the process of drilling a new ultra-deep well to increase production,” the President stated.
President Ali used a relatable analogy, saying:
“The pressure in the well that supplies all of these communities is aging—and all of us, when we age, we slow down.”
He assured residents that the water pressure problems will be alleviated once the new well is operational.
Contractor Terminated on East Bank Project
In another update, President Ali revealed that the contractor responsible for the airline coffer dam project on the East Bank of the Essequibo was terminated due to unsatisfactory performance. A new contractor is expected to be appointed by the end of this week, with the President stressing that no further delays should occur.
“All of the required materials have been procured and are currently in Guyana,” he added.
Water Resilience Funding
These water infrastructure projects are being supported under the Coastal Adaptation Resilience Project, funded by a US$45 million agreement signed with the World Bank in July 2024. The initiative focuses on rehabilitating or replacing fortified outfalls and kokers across Guyana to strengthen climate resilience.
