Coalition Talks Between APNU and AFC: What Went Wrong?

Talks between the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance for Change (AFC) officially broke down in April. Still, new details are shedding light on the sticking points that have derailed a potential coalition.
Early in negotiations, the AFC reportedly proposed receiving 65% of cabinet appointments, including:
- The Office of the Prime Minister
- The Ministry of Finance
- The Office of the Attorney General
- And the role of Representative of the List
At a press conference on Friday, AFC Leader Nigel Hughes was asked whether there’s still hope for unity between the two sides. He indicated that the door remains open if compromises can be reached.
“There will always be a commitment to try and find that middle ground where everybody is comfortable,” Hughes stated.
News also confirms that the AFC had agreed to PNCR leader Aubrey Norton being the presidential candidate in a potential coalition. However, Hughes said this agreement came with conditions that were ultimately rejected by the other side.
“One of the proposals we made included him in that position, but the conditions attached were not accepted,” he explained.
Meanwhile, PNCR Central Executive Member Ganesh Mahipal struck an optimistic tone, suggesting that a deal could still materialize quickly, especially as political deadlines draw closer.
“What seems far from achieving can be achieved with just the click of a finger,” Mahipal said. “It may look distant now, but as soon as this press conference ends, it could be achieved.”
He emphasized that key dates—such as the submission of symbols and nomination day—will be crucial in determining whether APNU and AFC will appear on the ballot as a united front.
