Bayrock Stadium Nears Completion as Linden Sports Revival Gains Momentum
The Bayrock Track and Field Stadium in Linden is nearing completion, following a recent site visit by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jr., Minister of Public Service Steven Jacobs, and Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister Kwame McCoy.
The facility forms part of the governmentโs nationwide stadium development programme and is being constructed to international standards. Once completed, it will be capable of hosting major athletics meets as well as FIFA-approved football events.
Scheduled to become fully operational in 2026, the stadium is already earmarked to host CARIFTA Trials and has renewed optimism around the return of the National Schoolsโ Track and Field Championships to Linden, strengthening the townโs role in national sports development.
Aiden Tinnie Dominates National U-12 Rapid Chess Championships
In chess, competition unfolded at the MOO! Milk-sponsored National Under-12 Open Rapid Chess Tournament, held at the ACADO Building on the East Bank of Demerara. The seven-round event attracted 42 players, comprising 28 boys and 14 girls.
Aiden Tinnie emerged as the boysโ champion with a flawless seven-point performance. Vir Narine finished second with six points, while Arian Tinnie placed third with five points. Rafael Cappell and Javier Davenand rounded out the top five.
In the girlsโ division, Divya Persaud secured the title with 6.5 points, followed by Amaya Sharma on six points, and Saura Ruplall in third place with five points.
Mark DeFreitas captured the Under-10 Open title ahead of Avery Munroe and Pranav Suman, while Malia Thompson won the Under-10 Girls category. In the Under-8 Boys division, Pranav Suman claimed victory, with Roshan Ali second and Tariq John third.
Neron Barrow Completes Move to Jamaicaโs Premier League
National striker Neron Barrow has completed a two-year transfer from Guyana Police Force FC to Waterhouse FC in the Jamaican Premier League.
The 21-year-old leaves Guyana as one of the most prolific forwards in the Guyana Football Federation Elite League, having secured consecutive Golden Boot titles and scoring 54 goals over the past two seasons. Barrow said the move reflects his desire to compete at a higher level and continue his professional development.
New Leadership Installed at Georgetown Cricket Club
The Georgetown Cricket Club held its annual awards ceremony and biennial general meeting at Bourda, culminating in the election of new office bearers.
Don Singh was elected as club president, while Graeme Ali was re-elected vice president. Timothy Bhagwandin will serve as secretary, with Gavin Ramsoondar and Kemraj Jaikaran reappointed as treasurer and club captain respectively. Richard Kansinally retained his position as committee member, now joined by Leon Johnson and Keon Howard.
During the awards ceremony, Ramesh Persaud accepted the Best Batter award on behalf of his son, Dr Navindra Persaud. Devon Lord was named Best Bowler, while Yeudstir Persaud received the prestigious Cricketer of the Year award.
Four Guyanese Named in West Indies Squad for Afghanistan Series
Cricket West Indies has announced a 16-member squad to contest a three-match T20 International series against Afghanistan in the United Arab Emirates from January 17 to 22.
The squad, led by Brandon King, includes four Guyanese players: Shamar Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Shimron Hetmyer, and first-time selectee Quentin Samson.
Cricket West Indies has indicated that its final 2026 World Cup squad will be selected following the conclusion of the Afghanistan series.
