GFF Super 16 Cup Delivers Exciting Weekend Action
Action continued in the 2025 GFF Super 16 Cup with multiple fixtures played at the National Training Centre, Providence, producing competitive encounters and strong performances.
On Saturday, Buxton Stars FC secured a convincing 3–1 victory over Rupununi Strikers FC, led by a skilful brace from Chidieber Chidume. Sheeran Daniels scored for Rupununi, while Teon Stewart added to Buxton’s tally.
In the second match on Saturday, Mahaica Determinators also recorded a 3–1 win over Uitvlugt Warriors. Shamal Smith found the net for Uitvlugt, but Julius Hamilton’s impressive double and a goal from Brian James sealed victory for Mahaica.
Sunday’s fixtures saw Zeelugt FC defeat Beacon FC 4–1, powered by two goals from Johnny Basanta and additional strikes from Ouano Fraser and Hector Hezacon. Ronaldo Abrams scored Beacon’s lone goal.
The final match of the weekend ended in a tightly contested 2–1 victory for Fruta Conquerors FC over Camptown FC.
Vurlon Mills Football Academy Shines on International Tour
The Vurlon Mills Football Academy (VMFA) returned to Guyana following a highly successful international tour to Trinidad and Tobago, marking another milestone in the academy’s youth development programme.
Competing against strong regional opposition, VMFA teams showcased discipline, tactical awareness, and resilience while gaining invaluable exposure to diverse playing styles.
The Under-11 team captured the Onboard Competition title and finished third in the Concept Coach Tournament, winning six of seven matches and scoring 13 goals.
Meanwhile, the Under-13 team also won the Onboard Competition and placed second in the Concept Coach Tournament, recording seven victories from nine matches and scoring 15 goals, with every player given match exposure.
VMFA reaffirmed that international competition remains central to its philosophy, describing the tour as a key step in developing well-rounded athletes and future ambassadors of Guyanese football.
GDF FC Crowned Champions of GFF Division 1 Women’s League
The official presentation ceremony for the 2025 GFF Division 1 Women’s League was held on Friday at the National Training Centre.
Guyana Defence Force FC emerged champions, earning the $1 million top prize. Their standout player, Sandra Johnson, finished as the league’s top scorer and was named Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Second place Guyana Police Force FC received $500,000, while Santos FC collected $300,000 for third place. Fruta Conquerors FC rounded out the standings in fourth place with $100,000.
Playoff action in the Women’s Division 1 League is set to continue with semi-final fixtures on Friday at the National Training Centre.
Zion Hickerson Finishes Runner-Up at Casely International
Guyana’s junior tennis standout Zion Hickerson capped an impressive campaign by finishing runner-up in the boys’ division of the Casely International Tennis Championship in Florida.
Competing in a field of over 200 players, Hickerson delivered strong performances, defeating opponents from Japan, Costa Rica, and Guatemala en route to the final. His run built on momentum gained from the Little Mo International Tournament.
Hickerson eventually fell to Colombia’s Samuel Radhakrishnan in the championship match. He now turns his attention to squash as he prepares for the US Junior Squash Championships in Philadelphia.
West Indies Chase Historic Test Win in New Zealand
In cricket, the West Indies will face New Zealand in the third and final Test of the series, starting Wednesday at the Bay Oval.
New Zealand enter the fixture with a 1–0 series lead, following a draw in the first Test at Hagley Oval and a dominant nine-wicket victory in the second Test at the Basin Reserve. Historically, New Zealand have won 11 and drawn five of their last 16 home Tests against the West Indies.
The Caribbean side will be seeking their first Test victory in New Zealand since February 1995, as they aim to close the series on a historic high.
